It through a reasonable filter material selection and filling method, as well as physical and chemical effects, successfully achieved the effective removal of suspended impurities in water, improve the water quality, and provide good conditions for the subsequent water treatment process.
The Filtering Process
Raw water enters from the filter inlet (1) and percolates through the filter bed (2). Suspended materials come into contact and attach to the media particles. Clean water flows through the filtration nozzles (3) and out of the filter via the outlet valve (4). 

The gradual dirt buildup in the filter bed causes an increase in the pressure differential across the filter and when it reaches its maximum design value, a cleaning process should be performed. In automatic media filter installations a pressure differential switch senses the pressure differential and when it reaches a preset value, the self cleaning process begins.

The working principle of the multi-media filter mainly involves the selection of the filter medium, the filling method, and the physical and chemical effects in the filtration process. Here's how it works in detail:
1. Selection and filling of filter media
Multi-media filters use one or more filter media, such as quartz sand, activated carbon, manganese sand, etc. These filter media have different mechanical strength, chemical stability and adsorption capacity, can effectively remove suspended impurities in water  The filling method of the filter material is usually arranged in layers according to the specific gravity and particle size, such as the anthracite with small specific gravity is placed on the upper layer of the filter bed, the quartz sand with moderate specific gravity is placed on the middle layer, and the heavier gravel is placed on the bottom layer. This design can ensure that the filter in the
backwash does not occur when the phenomenon of disorderly layer, Thus, the retention capacity of the filter material is ensured.
2. Physical effects in the filtration process
When the raw water passes through the multi-media filter, the suspended matter in the water is trapped on the surface of the filter layer due to adsorption and mechanical choke. When the water flows into the middle of the filter layer, because the sand particles in the filter material layer are arranged more closely, the particles in the water have more opportunities to collide with the sand, so that the flocculant, suspended matter and the surface of the sand stick to each other, and the impurities in the water are trapped in the filter material layer, so as to obtain the clarified water quality .
3. Chemical action in the filtration process
Although the main role of the multi-media filter is to remove suspended impurities in the water through physical retention, it can also remove some organic substances, heterochromatic substances and odorous substances in the water to a certain extent. This is mainly due to the adsorption capacity of activated carbon and other filter materials .
